Earlier Report Observations
The market volume for dried mushrooms in Thailand showed considerable variation between 2018 and 2022. It reached a peak of 15.3 thousand tons in 2019, followed by a contraction to 11.9 thousand tons in 2020 and a modest recovery to 13.6 thousand tons by 2022. This period was characterized by a steady decline in import volumes, which fell from 21.4 thousand tons in 2018 to 12.3 thousand tons in 2022, while domestic production fluctuated between 2.6 and 3.6 thousand tons.
A sharp turning point occurred in 2023, when the total market volume contracted by 36% to 8.7 thousand tons. This decline was primarily driven by government-recommended measures to limit mushroom imports, aimed at protecting domestic producers from cheaper Chinese supplies. Concurrently, a shift in consumer preferences towards organic and processed mushroom products stimulated investment in value-added processing and the adoption of automated cultivation systems to improve quality and efficiency.
Into 2024, pressures on import volumes persisted due to Thailand's ongoing trade deficit and stricter enforcement of laws against illegal imports, further constraining supply. These regulatory and trade policy measures, coupled with continued support for domestic agricultural adaptation, defined the trade dynamics for dried mushrooms in the latter part of the period.
