Between 2018 and 2020, the Dutch market for dextrins and modified starches contracted from 477 thousand tons to 403 thousand tons in volume. During this period, the Netherlands consolidated its position as a major global exporter of these products, which influenced trade flows and market structure. Production volumes declined from 801 thousand tons to 695 thousand tons over these years, contributing to the smaller domestic market size.

After a recovery to 462 thousand tons in 2022, the market volume dropped sharply to 203 thousand tons in 2023 and further to 171 thousand tons in 2024. This decline was driven by a significant reduction in domestic production, which fell from 749 thousand tons to 551 thousand tons between 2022 and 2023. Throughout this volatile period, the Netherlands maintained its role as one of the world's top exporters, with export values reaching over $800 million in 2023 despite the shrinking home market.

The lowest volume was recorded in 2019 at 391.1 thousand tonnes, which saw the largest decline of 5.6%.

Analysis of export volumes from 2018 to 2021 reveals a broad distribution across many markets. Germany accounted for 21.5% of exports, France for 7.7%, and Sweden for 6.6%. Together, these three countries represented 35.8% of total flows, while the remaining 64.2% went to other partners.

In 2021, exports reached 486.0 million US dollars, marking a significant increase of 16.4% compared to 2020. Over the 2018-2021 period, exports grew by 14%, with a compound annual growth rate of 4.5%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 407.8 million US dollars, which experienced the largest decline of 4.4%.
