The EU market showed signs of recovery in 2021, but Sweden experienced a continued decline in consumption, leading to a 7.2% drop in market volume to 104.1 thousand tons. A sharp reversal occurred in 2022, with market volume surging 23.7% to 128.8 thousand tons. This increase was driven by a rise in imports to 98.4 thousand tons and a decrease in exports to 59.9 thousand tons, while domestic production grew to 90.3 thousand tons.

By 2023, market volume in physical terms fell 24.1% to 97.7 thousand tons. However, in value terms, the market grew 6.8% to 118.5 million USD, indicating significantly higher unit prices. Imports declined to 72.2 thousand tons and exports to 58.5 thousand tons. Preliminary 2024 data shows imports recovering to 86.0 thousand tons and exports falling further to 55.2 thousand tons.

Over the 2017-2020 period, exports declined by 6.6%, with an average annual growth rate of -2.2%. The highest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 69.1 thousand tons, which also saw the largest annual increase of 2.2%.
