In 2018, the Ministry of Agriculture introduced certified high-yield coconut seeds to boost domestic coconut production, which later supported raw material supply for desiccated coconut. After a modest increase in 2019, market value surged in 2020 and 2021.

Market size fell to USD 7.2 million in 2022 as prices rose due to hot weather, supply disruptions from Indonesia, and monkey damage to coconut crops. During this period, local companies adapted by offering bulk packaging for the food industry and halal-certified products, diversifying the market segments. By 2023, the market stabilized at USD 7.3 million.

Malaysia's production of desiccated coconuts grew for the third year in a row. In 2021, the country produced 9 677 tonnes, an 8.2% increase from the previous year. Over the 2018-2021 period, production rose by 30.8%, with an average annual growth rate of 9.4%.

Exports desiccated coconuts from Malaysia

Malaysia exported 13 844 tonnes of desiccated coconuts in 2021, a 5.3% decrease from the previous year. Between 2018 and 2021, exports increased by 3.5%, averaging 1.1% per year. The lowest export volume was in 2019 at 11 978 tonnes, with the largest decline of 10.5% that year. Exports peaked in 2020 at 14 625 tonnes, marking the largest increase of 22.1%.

From 2018 to 2021, Singapore, Pakistan, and Turkey were the main buyers of desiccated coconuts from Malaysia, accounting for 25.2%, 22.1%, and 15.4% of exports in kind, respectively. Together, they made up 62.7% of total exports in kind.

Malaysia's export value of desiccated coconuts rose for the second consecutive year. In 2021, exports reached 15 835 thousand US dollars, a strong 17.4% increase from 2020. The lowest value was in 2019 at 9 734 thousand US dollars, which also experienced the largest decline of 37.3%. The largest increase occurred in 2020, with a 38.6% rise.

Between 2018 and 2021, Pakistan, the United Kingdom, and Turkey were the primary buyers of desiccated coconuts from Malaysia in value terms, accounting for 19.1%, 19.0%, and 15.8% of exports, respectively. Collectively, they represented 53.8% of total export value.

Over the 2018-2021 period, import value grew by 40.5%, with an average annual growth rate of 12.0%. The lowest value was in 2019 at 8 112 thousand US dollars, which saw the largest decline of 32.7%. The largest increase occurred in 2020, with a 60.6% jump.
