Earlier Report Observations

The market for melons and papayas in Malaysia began the period with stable volume, recording 124.8 thousand tonnes in 2018 and 124.4 thousand tonnes in 2019. Domestic production was aided by recovery from Papaya Dieback and PSRV diseases, which had previously impacted yields. Market volume then rose to 135.9 thousand tonnes in 2020.

Starting in 2021, a documented decline in self-sufficiency ratios for papaya and watermelon signaled that domestic production could not meet domestic demand. This structural shortfall led to increased imports in subsequent years, supporting market volume growth to 141.4 thousand tonnes in 2022 and 147.2 thousand tonnes in 2023. During this phase, authorities implemented the National Food Security Policy 2021-2025 and the National Agro-Food Policy 2021-2030 to address underlying food security concerns.
