Earlier Report Observations

From 2018, the desiccated coconut market in the Dominican Republic faced structural constraints due to aging coconut plantations, which limited production capacity and created a gap between supply and growing demand. The presence of established processors like PROFRUVECA, a pioneer in continuous coconut dehydration, supported the domestic supply chain. Market volume grew moderately, reaching 31 743 t by 2020, as imports began to increase to meet demand.

A significant expansion occurred in 2021-2022, with market volume surging to over 50 000 t. This growth was primarily driven by adverse weather conditions in previous years, which constrained local coconut harvests and led to a sustained shortage in supply. To bridge this gap, imports rose sharply, compensating for the slow annual production growth of around 2%. The government's National Plan for the Relaunch of the Coconut Sector, initiated to improve growers' livelihoods and boost the industry's potential, provided additional momentum during this period.

By 2023, market volume adjusted to 39 193 t. The state-owned FEDA (Special Fund for Agricultural Development) executed a national plan involving substantial investment to plant new coconut areas and satisfy rising local and international demand, fueled by growing consumer preference for coconut's nutritional benefits. However, persistent challenges—including aging plantations, phytosanitary issues, and continued weather-related supply instability—limited production growth and contributed to a reduction in imports, leading to the market's contraction from its 2022 peak.
