Densified wood market in Spain

After declining to $67.8 million in 2019, the densified wood market in Spain grew to $69.6 million in 2020, coinciding with an update of professional qualifications in the wood sector, including laminated wood bonding systems, which may have improved production processes and stimulated material use. In 2021, the market surged by 35% to $94.0 million, reflecting strong consumption growth.

In subsequent years, the market continued to be shaped by regulatory changes such as the revision of Eurocode 5 for timber structures and the introduction of stricter CE marking requirements. By 2024, increased demand for wood construction due to sustainability and energy efficiency policies created additional momentum for the densified wood market, while global trends towards bio-based materials also had an impact.

Spain's densified wood production value declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, output was valued at 74 293 thousand US dollars, reflecting a slight decrease of 1.1% compared to the previous year. The largest increase occurred in 2018, at 8.9%, when production reached its peak value of 81 294 thousand US dollars. The most significant decline was recorded in 2019, at 7.6%.

After two years of decline, Spain's densified wood production volume increased. In 2020, 3 552 thousand cubic meters were produced, up 1.7% from the previous year. The lowest volume was recorded in 2019 at 3 492 thousand cubic meters, which saw the largest decline of 15.5%. Overall, between 2017 and 2020, production decreased by 18.4%, equating to an annualized rate of 6.6%.

The market exhibited volatility during the observed period. In 2019, exports reached their highest volume at 643.7 thousand cubic meters, with the largest increase of 232.1%. However, in 2020, exports dropped sharply to 45.5 thousand cubic meters, marking an intense reduction of 92.9% compared to 2019. This resulted in a 14.1-fold gap between the highest and lowest export volumes.

From 2017 to 2020, Colombia, France, and Morocco were the top buyers of densified wood from Spain, accounting for 35.8%, 31.4%, and 27.3% of exports in kind, respectively. Together, they represented 94.5% of total exports in kind.

In 2020, Spain's densified wood export value totaled 12 939 thousand US dollars, marking a drop of 32.9% year-over-year. The largest increase was recorded in 2019 at 6.6%. Between 2017 and 2020, exports decreased by 44.5%, equating to an annualized rate of 17.8%.

Over the period 2017–2020, France, the Netherlands, and Morocco were the main destinations for Spain's densified wood exports in value terms, accounting for 57.1%, 7.3%, and 7.2% of exports, respectively. Together, they absorbed 71.6% of total export value.

After a two-year uptick, Spain's densified wood imports declined. In 2020, imports amounted to 480.6 thousand cubic meters, corresponding to a moderate decrease of 4.1% compared to 2019. The highest volume was recorded in 2019 at 501.1 thousand cubic meters, which saw the largest increase of 41.1%. Overall, between 2017 and 2020, imports increased by 41.6%, equating to an annualized rate of 12.3%.

From 2017 to 2020, France, China, and the Netherlands were the principal suppliers of densified wood to Spain, accounting for 52.3%, 21.7%, and 9.0% of imports in kind, respectively. Jointly, they made up 82.9% of total imports in kind.

Spain's densified wood import value declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, imports amounted to 8 268 thousand US dollars, indicating a drop of 30.5% from a year earlier. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 12 883 thousand US dollars, which saw the largest increase of 39.3%. Between 2017 and 2020, imports decreased by 10.6%, equating to an annualized rate of 3.7%.

Over 2017–2020, imports in value terms were distributed across a wide set of partner countries. Portugal, France, and China were the top contributors, accounting for 24.2%, 12.6%, and 11.8% of imports in value terms, respectively. Together, they represented 48.6% of total import flows.
