The Spanish non-coniferous roundwood market contracted in physical volume between 2018 and 2023, falling from 11.8 million m³ to 8.9 million m³. This decline coincided with a reduction in domestic production, which decreased from 9.0 million m³ to 9.0 million m³, and a sharp drop in import volumes, which plummeted from 3.9 million m³ to 1.2 million m³ over the period.

In value terms, the market showed the opposite trend, growing from $656 million in 2018 to $800 million in 2023. The rise in market value occurred despite lower physical consumption, indicating a significant increase in average prices or a shift toward higher-value products within the market.

The import sector underscored this change, as import volume fell by nearly 70% between 2018 and 2021, while the value of imports nearly doubled to $80 million by 2023. Export values also rose substantially, contributing to a higher-value trade flow for the sector by the end of the period.

Spain's non-coniferous roundwood production has declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 8 357 K m³, marking a slight decrease of 1.0% compared to 2019. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, overall production grew by 3.4%, with an average annual growth rate of 1.1%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 9 034 K m³, which saw an 11.8% increase. The most significant drop occurred in 2019, with a 6.6% decline.

In 2020, the value of non-coniferous roundwood production in Spain reached 674.3 M $ US, rising by 22.7% from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production value increased by 7%, with an average annual growth rate of 2.3%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 549.6 M $ US, which represented a 27.6% decline. The peak value occurred in 2018 at 759.4 M $ US.

After two years of growth, Spain's exports of non-coniferous roundwood in volume terms declined. In 2020, export volume stood at 1 018 K m³, showing a substantial drop of 20.4% compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, exports increased by 17.9%, with an average annual growth rate of 5.7%. The highest volume was recorded in 2019 at 1 279 K m³, which saw a 30.5% increase.

Between 2017 and 2020, Portugal was the dominant market for Spain's non-coniferous roundwood exports in volume terms, accounting for 89.1% of total flows, while other countries made up the remaining share.

Following two years of gains, Spain's non-coniferous roundwood exports in value terms declined. In 2020, exports amounted to 82 142 K $ US, reflecting a modest decrease of 1.4% from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, export value grew by 22.1%, with an average annual growth rate of 6.9%. The peak value was recorded in 2019 at 83 290 K $ US, while the largest increase occurred in 2018 with a 22.4% rise.

From 2017 to 2020, Portugal accounted for nearly all of Spain's non-coniferous roundwood exports in value terms, with a share of 90.0% of total flows.

In 2020, imports reached 1 403 K m³, representing a significant improvement of 39.3% compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports surged by 380.8%, with an average annual growth rate of 68.8%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Portugal consistently represented 78.8% of Spain's total non-coniferous roundwood imports in volume terms, indicating a high concentration on this market, with the remainder shared among other countries.

The highest value was recorded in 2019 at 44 237 K $ US, while the largest increase occurred in 2018 with an 18.7% rise.
