From 2018 to 2020, production of fresh currants and gooseberries in Asia remained stable at around 8 300 t per year, while the market size reached 9 792 t in 2020. Growing global health awareness boosted demand for gooseberries, supported by their use in food, cosmetics, and supplements. A large-scale tree-planting campaign in Tamil Nadu, India, which included gooseberries, also indicated regional efforts to expand supply.

Market size peaked at 10 637 t in 2021, driven largely by a surge in imports to 2 552 t, aligning with sustained consumer interest in local and organic products. However, from 2022 onwards, production declined, falling to 7 924 t in 2023, and market size dropped to 8 803 t. Adverse weather conditions, noted in industry reports for their impact on production volumes, contributed to the downturn in yields.

Imports recovered to 2 183 t in 2024, suggesting persistent demand even as domestic production faced challenges.

Asia's production of currants and gooseberries has increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the region produced 8,377 tonnes, showing only a marginal fluctuation compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, production grew by 2.9%, which translates to an annualized growth rate of 0.9%.
