Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2019, the Canadian market for crude and rifted mica sheets remained stable at approximately 21 000 t. During this period, key regulatory changes were implemented: amendments to the Food and Drug Regulations permitted the use of mica coated with titanium dioxide and/or iron oxide as colorants in pharmaceuticals, opening a new demand segment, while the nationwide ban on asbestos and asbestos-containing products created potential for material substitution in various industries.

Market volume fell sharply to 13 265 t in 2020, a 37% decrease from the previous year. This decline occurred alongside the proposal and consultations for the Clean Fuel Regulations, which aimed to reduce the carbon intensity of fossil fuels and could indirectly raise operational costs for extractive industries, including mica mining.

Production partially recovered to 16 064 t in 2021 following the establishment of the Mining Innovation Commercialization Accelerator (MICA) Network, backed by a CAD 40 million government investment to accelerate clean technology development and commercialization in the mining sector. However, market volume declined again to 14 295 t in 2022, coinciding with amended environmental rules such as revisions to the Metal and Diamond Mining Effluent Regulations and changes to federal labor law that raised the minimum working age, potentially affecting operational dynamics.
