Earlier Report Observations

The market volume for cottonseed oil in Brazil fluctuated between 2018 and 2023, starting at 233.5 thousand tons and reaching 367.6 thousand tons. After a rise to 284.6 thousand tons in 2019, consumption dipped in 2020 and again in 2022. The decline in 2022 was driven by lower external prices, falling oil prices, and buyer preference for soybean oil due to its similar performance and competitive pricing, which delayed domestic sales of cottonseed oil. The market then rebounded strongly in 2023, growing by over 30% to 367.6 thousand tons.

Structural shifts in the cotton industry supported the market from 2024. Brazil consolidated its position as the world's third-largest cotton producer, with expanding production and exports of cottonseed for oil and biodiesel. The sector transitioned from family farming to corporate and cooperative models, benefiting from technological advances. From August 2025, the mandatory biodiesel blend in diesel increased to 15%, boosting demand for cottonseed oil as a feedstock. Additionally, a new technical regulation for refined cottonseed oil was proposed in 2025, setting standards for classification, quality, and labeling.
