Earlier Report Observations

The cotton seeds market in Burkina Faso expanded sharply in 2019, with volume reaching 535.5 thousand tons, up 46% from 366.8 thousand tons in 2018. This growth was driven by government incentive policies, including a higher purchase price for cotton seeds, fertilizer subsidies, and reduced input costs, which stimulated production. The same period saw the launch of the country's first organic cotton ginning plant in Koudougou, marking the emergence of a new product segment.

Market volume stabilized near 529.2 thousand tons in 2020 with the establishment of West Africa's first organic cotton ginning plant, SECOBIO. However, a production crisis triggered by jassid pest attacks and soaring fertilizer and freight costs led to a contraction, with volume falling to 459.9 thousand tons by 2022. This decline occurred despite record minimum prices set at 300 FCFA/kg and massive government subsidies for fertilizers and inputs aimed at supporting farmers.

In 2023, market volume recovered to 491.8 thousand tons, supported by continued subsidies and production targets. State-owned companies SOFITEX, SOCOMA, and FASO COTON, which control about 80% of production, maintained their central role in seed distribution throughout the period.
