Earlier Report Observations

The European corn oil market volume showed sharp swings between 2018 and 2020. It began at 351 000 t in 2018, fell to 249 000 t in 2019, then jumped to 395 000 t in 2020. Early in the period, a weaker euro against the dollar and US-China trade tensions affected vegetable oil prices and supply conditions in Europe.

After a decline to 366 000 t in 2021, the market stabilized at 358 000 t in 2022. Shell's announcement of a biodiesel plant in Rotterdam signaled future industrial demand for vegetable oils, including corn oil. By 2023, the market expanded to 399 000 t, driven by growing consumer awareness of health and sustainability, which increased demand for non-chemically modified corn oil. Repeated droughts in Southern Europe from 2022 onward also affected competing oil supplies, influencing market dynamics.
