Earlier Report Observations

In 2019, the corn oil market volume in the Americas fell to 1.5 million tons from 2.0 million tons the previous year. This sharp decline was linked to a significant drop in demand for processed corn oil in Brazil, where consumption decreased by over 20% due to changes in local market conditions. At the same time, exports of refined corn oil grew rapidly in the United States, China, and South Africa, indicating the entry and expansion of players in these markets. Over the next two years, production recovered, reaching 1.7 million tons in 2021, supported by high corn harvests in the region, which increased raw material availability for processing.

By 2022, market volume again decreased to 1.6 million tons, despite regulatory changes in the U.S. and Canada that favored the production and use of biodiesel, boosting demand for corn oil as a feedstock. In 2023, production stabilized at 1.6 million tons, underpinned by growing consumer demand for healthier oils, including non-GMO options, and technological innovations such as improved oil extraction methods at ethanol plants implemented by Green Plains Inc.
