Earlier Report Observations

Production of beef, sheep, and goat fat in the Americas grew steadily from 7 139 thousand tons in 2018 to 7 585 thousand tons in 2023. The overall market volume followed a different path, expanding from 6 998 thousand tons in 2018 to a peak of 7 449 thousand tons in 2020 before contracting to 6 971 thousand tons by 2023.

Import volumes were volatile, rising sharply to 384 thousand tons in 2020 and again to 213 thousand tons in 2024, while exports demonstrated a strong upward trend from 279 thousand tons in 2018 to 718 thousand tons in 2023, moderating to 618 thousand tons in 2024.

The U.S. market in 2024 experienced a 10.68% increase in import volumes for these fats despite a 17.97% drop in their import value, caused by a 25.88% decline in average prices. This growth was supported by rising demand for animal fats in food applications, oleochemicals, and biodiesel, partly driven by shifting consumer preferences toward high-fat diets such as keto and paleo.
