From 2018 to 2020, Fiji's copra market volume fell from 5 746 t to 2 836 t. Local production was limited by ageing coconut trees and high transport costs from outer islands, while imports dropped sharply in 2020 due to global supply chain disruptions affecting world coconut oil trade. Government subsidies introduced after Cyclone Winston helped stabilize farmer incomes but could not reverse the overall decline.

The market rebounded from 2021, reaching 4 992 t in 2022. The release of the early-yielding Mua Hybrid coconut variety boosted domestic production, which rose from 1 945 t in 2020 to 2 296 t in 2021. Record global copra prices in 2022, driven by worldwide coconut oil shortages, further incentivized production growth, supported by continued government subsidies. The state-owned Fiji Coconut Millers expanded into food-grade coconut oil, diversifying the industry.

In 2023, domestic production reached a peak of 4 076 t, but imports fell to 648 t, leading to a slight market contraction to 4 724 t. The sustained production increase reflects the ongoing impact of improved varieties and farmer support programs.

Fiji's copra production has declined for the third year in a row. In 2019, the country produced 2 032 tonnes of copra, but by 2020, this figure had dropped to 1 945 tonnes, marking a 4.3% decrease. Over the broader period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 65.7%, which translates to an average annual decline of 30.0%.

Imports in kind, t

Fiji's imports of copra have decreased for the third consecutive year. In 2019, imports stood at 2 062 tonnes, but by 2020, they had fallen to 891 tonnes, representing a sharp 56.8% drop over the year. From 2017 to 2020, imports declined by 75.5%, averaging an annual reduction of 37.4%.

Fiji's copra imports in value terms have also declined for the third year running. In 2019, imports were valued at 527 thousand US dollars, but by 2020, this had decreased to 279 thousand US dollars, a 47.1% fall. Between 2017 and 2020, imports dropped by 86.4%, with an average annual decline of 48.6%.
