This was followed by a robust recovery phase, with the market expanding by over 700 thousand tons to reach a peak of 4 271 thousand tons in 2022, before easing to 4 068 thousand tons in the following year.

The market's movement closely mirrored changes in domestic production, which fell to 3 571 thousand tons in 2020 before surging to 4 261 thousand tons in 2022. Trade flows remained a secondary factor, with net imports playing a modest role as exports fluctuated and imports generally declined over the period, contributing to the overall market dynamics without defining its primary direction.

Copra production in ASEAN declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, ASEAN produced 3 571 thousand tons of copra, marking a significant reduction of 10.9% compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production decreased by 12%, with an average annual decline of 4.2%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 4 162 thousand tons, which also saw the largest annual increase of 2.5%.

Copra production in ASEAN declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the output of copra in ASEAN was valued at 2 351 million US dollars, representing a 14.0% decrease year-over-year. Between 2017 and 2020, production value fell by 42.1%, equating to an average annual decline of 16.7%.

Exports copra from ASEAN

There were noticeable fluctuations in market performance during the period. From the low in 2017 to the high in 2019, export volumes varied by 2.4 times. In 2020, copra shipments from ASEAN to abroad totaled 89.6 thousand tons, which is 34.3% lower than the previous year. The maximum value was recorded in 2019 at 136.4 thousand tons, with the largest increase occurring in 2018 at 88.8%.

Throughout 2017 to 2020, China and Bangladesh accounted for 80.3% of total exports in kind, while the remaining share was distributed among other destinations with smaller individual contributions.

After a two-year increase, ASEAN's copra export volume declined. In 2020, exports totaled 59.0 million US dollars, corresponding to a fall of 36.6% year-over-year. The maximum value was recorded in 2019 at 93.1 million US dollars, with the largest increase occurring in 2018 at 56.8%.

In 2017 to 2020, China (51.2% of exports in value terms), Bangladesh (24.6% of exports in value terms), and India (12.5% of exports in value terms) were the principal buyers of copra from ASEAN, jointly accounting for 88.4% of total exports in value terms.

Imports copra to ASEAN

Imports in kind, K t

After a two-year decline, foreign copra supplies to ASEAN increased. In 2020, imports amounted to 51.6 thousand tons, constituting a significant increase of 13.1% versus the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports decreased by 53.5%, with an average annual decline of 22.5%. The minimum value was recorded in 2019 at 45.7 thousand tons, which also saw the largest decline of 54.0%.

Throughout 2017 to 2020, Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu clearly dominated imports in kind of copra to ASEAN, jointly accounting for 81.1% of total flows, whereas other countries held much smaller shares.

After a two-year decline, ASEAN's copra import volume increased. ASEAN imported 30.9 million US dollars of copra in 2020, reflecting a steep advance of 53.8% compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports decreased by 70.7%, with an average annual decline of 33.6%. The minimum value was recorded in 2019 at 20.1 million US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 68.9%.

Over 2017 to 2020, Papua New Guinea (63.4% of imports in value terms), Vanuatu (15.8% of imports in value terms), and Solomon Islands (14.3% of imports in value terms) made the biggest contribution to imports in value terms, jointly accounting for 93.5% of total flows.
