Earlier Report Observations

Production of coniferous wood fuel in Central America increased gradually from 27 954 thousand m³ in 2018 to 28 880 thousand m³ in 2023. This growth occurred within a context where 93% of wood used for fuel came from forests, with a high reliance on coniferous species that form a significant part of productive forest resources. Intensive extraction for firewood and fuel led to overexploitation of pine forests, sustaining output to meet consistent demand.

The market volume expanded from 28 487 thousand m³ in 2021 to 28 862 thousand m³ in 2023. In 2022, roundwood harvesting for fuel in Latin America, including Central America, remained stable, accounting for nearly half of total wood removals and directly supporting coniferous wood availability. By 2024, Mexico's active trade in wood, charcoal, and wood products highlighted the region's ongoing dependence on forest resources for energy and construction.
