Earlier Report Observations

The coniferous wood fuel market in Guatemala experienced steady growth from 12 962 thousand m³ in 2018 to 14 091 thousand m³ in 2023, increasing by approximately 1.7% each year. This consistent expansion was primarily driven by persistent high demand from rural households, where wood remains the dominant energy source for cooking and heating due to entrenched poverty, cultural preferences, and limited access to alternative fuels like propane.

The Instituto Nacional de Bosques (INAB) supported this production trend by authorizing annual volumes of timber extraction for fuel, with a significant portion allocated specifically for firewood. However, a structural deficit between sustainable supply and national demand persisted throughout the period, indicating that market growth was likely met through increased harvesting pressure rather than sustainable forestry initiatives.

Despite the ongoing National Strategy for Sustainable Production and Efficient Use of Firewood 2013–2024 and government programs promoting efficient stoves, these measures had limited impact on reducing consumption or significantly boosting sustainable output. Consequently, the market volume continued its upward trajectory, reliant on traditional demand factors and authorized extraction levels.
