From 2018 to 2020, the coffee market volume in Eastern Africa contracted sharply before stabilizing. The drop to 432 thousand tonnes in 2019 was primarily due to a surge in exports, as local auction prices remained attractive despite falling global benchmarks, drawing supply away from the domestic market. In 2020, market volume held steady at 432 thousand tonnes, as increased production fueled by the distribution of new high-yield varieties matched growing export demand from markets like China and the UAE.

The market shrank further to 359 thousand tonnes in 2021, when a 30% spike in export prices driven by global demand led to record overseas shipments that outpaced production gains. A strong rebound followed in 2022, with volume reaching 493 thousand tonnes, supported by a 23.4% rise in production following the widespread distribution of improved seedlings and favorable world prices, while exports moderated slightly. By 2023, volume edged down to 478 thousand tonnes, reflecting minor production fluctuations, although the launch of online coffee auctions on the Tanzania Mercantile Exchange enhanced market transparency and access.

Eastern Africa's export volume of coffee, husks, skins, and substitutes has increased for the second year in a row. In 2020, exports totaled 709.9 K t, marking a small gain of 0.7% compared to the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, exports grew by 17.5%, with an annualized rate of 5.5%. The minimum volume was in 2018 at 468.3 K t, which experienced the largest decline of 22.5%. In contrast, the largest increase occurred in 2019, with a jump of 50.6%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Germany, Italy, and Sudan were the top buyers of coffee, husks, skins, and substitutes from Eastern Africa, accounting for 15.3%, 12.6%, and 8.6% of exports in kind, respectively. In 2020, exports reached 1 800 M $ US, representing a modest increase of 4.6% over the previous year. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 1 187 M $ US, which saw the largest decline of 35.1%. The largest increase happened in 2019, with a rise of 45.0%.

From 2017 to 2020, Germany, the United States, and Italy were the leading buyers of coffee, husks, skins, and substitutes from Eastern Africa in value terms, contributing 14.1%, 11.8%, and 9.2% of exports, respectively. Coffee, husks, skins, and substitutes imports into Eastern Africa have increased for the second year in a row. In 2020, imports reached 9.7 K t, up by 62.8% from the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports grew by 91.6%, with an average annual growth rate of 24.2%. The minimum volume was in 2018 at 3.9 K t, which also saw the largest decline of 22.1%.

After a two-year decline, cross-border shipments of coffee, husks, skins, and substitutes into Eastern Africa have rebounded. In 2020, imports amounted to a substantial gain of 14.9% compared to 2019. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 28 M $ US, while the largest decline occurred in 2018, with a drop of 7.0%.
