Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2021, the domestic market volume for coffee extracts and coffee-based preparations in the Netherlands contracted significantly, from 15 357 t to 7 778 t. This decline was driven by a sharp reduction in local production, which fell by over 6 000 t, coupled with a sustained increase in exports that outpaced the growth in imports. The market's low point in 2021 coincided with production dropping to 12 521 t, while exports exceeded 30 000 t for the first time.

From 2022, several key developments influenced the trade dynamics. Global supply chain disruptions and adverse weather in Brazilian coffee-growing regions contributed to a 13% rise in average import prices, increasing costs for Dutch buyers. Concurrently, robust international demand for innovative and convenient coffee formats, including ready-to-drink beverages and liquid concentrates, supported strong export performance. Dutch exports surged to 37 503 t in 2023, and industry consolidation was evident with major players like Westrock Coffee expanding their portfolios through acquisition.

By 2024, the domestic market volume had further diminished to 5 489 t. The persistent gap between rising exports and more modest import and production growth defined the period. Consumer trends favoring premiumization and personalization, alongside the expansion of e-commerce channels, continued to orient the industry towards external markets, reinforcing the Netherlands' role as a significant exporter within the global coffee extracts trade.
