The coconut market volume in Sub-Saharan Africa declined from 2 143 thousand tons in 2018 to 1 977 thousand tons in 2021, before recovering to 2 289 thousand tons by 2023. This rebound was driven by growing global demand for natural products like virgin coconut oil, which encouraged local processing and consumption.

Investments in processing infrastructure across the region supported this growth. Artisanal extraction systems in Benin and Togo, industrial units in Madagascar and Niger, and new production facilities in Gabon increased the domestic use of coconuts for oil. The COVID-19 pandemic reinforced consumer preference for plant-based and sustainable goods, further boosting the market.

Sub-Saharan Africa's coconut production volume declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the region produced 2,102 thousand tonnes of coconuts, marking a 1.8% decrease from the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 6.8%, with a compound annual growth rate of -2.3%.

Exports coconuts from Sub-Saharan Africa

In 2020, coconut export volumes from Sub-Saharan Africa reached 40,935 tonnes, showing a robust increase of 20.6% compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports grew by 45.3%, equating to an annualized rate of 13.3%. The largest decline occurred in 2019, at 8.3%, while the largest increase was in 2018, at 31.4%.

From 2017 to 2020, the country breakdown of coconut exports in kind was scattered, with no single partner dominating. The Netherlands accounted for 13.6% of exports, Belgium for 9.0%, and Italy for 4.4%, together making up just 27.0% of total flows.

The market showed an unstable trend throughout the period. In 2020, coconut shipments from Sub-Saharan Africa amounted to 32,500 thousand US dollars, up by 81.9% year-on-year. The lowest export value was recorded in 2017, and the highest in 2020, with a two-fold gap between these years. The largest decline occurred in 2019, at 35.2%.

From 2017 to 2020, the geographical structure of coconut exports in value terms was highly diversified. Belgium accounted for 14.7% of exports, the Netherlands for 13.7%, and Vietnam for 10.6%, together representing only 39.0% of total flows. The remaining 61.0% was distributed among numerous smaller partner countries.

Imports coconuts to Sub-Saharan Africa

The market exhibited an unstable trend over the period. In 2020, imported coconut volumes into Sub-Saharan Africa amounted to 18,739 tonnes, showing a sharp rise of 83.9% compared to 2019. The lowest import volume was in 2017, and the highest in 2020, with a 2.1-fold gap. The largest decline occurred in 2019, at 4.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, coconuts were supplied to Sub-Saharan Africa from a broad set of markets. The Philippines accounted for 10.4% of imports in kind, Vietnam for 7.4%, and Indonesia for 5.8%, together making up only 23.7% of total imports. The remaining 76.3% came from many smaller destinations.

In 2020, coconut deliveries to Sub-Saharan Africa reached 14,176 thousand US dollars, showing a strong rise of 10.4% compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, imports decreased by 10.1%, equating to an annualized rate of -3.5%. The minimum value was recorded in 2019 at 12,843 thousand US dollars, and the maximum in 2018 at 18,549 thousand US dollars. The largest decline occurred in 2019, at 30.8%, while the largest increase was in 2018, at 17.7%.

From 2017 to 2020, Vietnam led the structure of coconut imports in value terms, accounting for 26.7%, followed by Indonesia at 22.0%, and the Philippines at 16.1%. Together, these three countries represented 64.8% of total flows.
