Earlier Report Observations

The coconut market volume in Cuba contracted sharply from 50 thousand t in 2018 to 28 thousand t in 2022. This decline was initiated by constraints in the agricultural sector, which faced difficulties accessing imported inputs like seeds and fertilizers, coupled with insufficient machinery and equipment, limiting production and market supply.

In 2023, the market rebounded to 34 thousand t, a 22% increase from the previous year. This recovery occurred amid a challenging economic environment where Cuba's GDP shrank by 1-2%, the COVID-19 pandemic imposed additional costs, and food inflation was driven by domestic production shortages and expensive transportation. For 2024, ongoing technical and fuel limitations, along with external factors such as the economic blockade and high global food prices, continue to affect agricultural production and distribution.
