Earlier Report Observations

The coconut market in the SADC region began the period at nearly 990 thousand tons in 2018, a level supported by the entry of new players into coconut oil production in Niger and the establishment of artisanal wet extraction systems in Benin and Togo. Market volume then contracted over the following three years, falling to 917 thousand tons by 2021.

A turnaround began in 2022, and the market expanded significantly to over 1 million tons in 2023. This growth was facilitated by increased manufacturing of coconut oil processing machinery in Mali, which boosted local industrial capacity. In 2024, South Africa's food hygiene regulation R638 continued to shape production standards, while global supply chain disruptions and a shift in consumer preferences toward natural and plant-based products influenced the broader market environment.
