Agricultural challenges including labor shortages, land fragmentation, and urbanization reduced land availability for coconut cultivation, constraining domestic production. The 2020 downturn occurred alongside broader supply chain and input shortages affecting the farming sector.

The market recovered to 12 962 tonnes in 2021 and then surged by 29% to 16 699 tonnes in 2022. This strong growth was driven by a shift in consumer preferences towards healthier snacking options, increasing demand for products like coconut cookies. Major company Century Spices & Snacks promoted such innovations, while online retail platforms like Daraz.com.np expanded the availability of coconut oil, milk, and water, significantly boosting distribution and consumption.

In 2023, market volume experienced a modest decline to 16 118 tonnes. Domestic production fell sharply by 20% to 3 754 tonnes, influenced by ongoing agricultural difficulties and the impact of climate change on coconut farming. Continued growth in imports, which reached 12 365 tonnes, helped mitigate the overall contraction in market size.
