Earlier Report Observations

The dried prunes market in the SADC region experienced considerable volatility from 2018 to 2023. After reaching 1.07 million tonnes in 2018, market volume contracted sharply by over 40% to 637 200 tonnes in 2019. A strong rebound followed in 2020, lifting consumption back to 1.08 million tonnes.

From 2021 onward, the market entered a phase of steady decline, falling to 632 800 tonnes by 2023. This downward trajectory was primarily driven by a steep reduction in imports, which dropped from 783 700 tonnes in 2018 to 359 900 tonnes in 2023. Export flows also varied significantly, contributing to the overall market fluctuations.

Domestic production fluctuated between 357 000 tonnes and 517 000 tonnes during the period, but these changes were overshadowed by the larger shifts in trade, which defined the market's overall direction.
