Domestic production remained stable at around 6.7 thousand tons annually throughout the period, while imports generally rose from 123.2 thousand tons to 150.1 thousand tons, driving the overall market expansion.

In 2024, imports remained elevated at 145.6 thousand tons. The market environment was shaped by a 30% growth in regional e-commerce, which boosted sales of coconut products through online channels, especially in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Kuwait. Adverse weather affecting global coconut supplies led to higher prices, while growing consumer preference for coconut-based products like oil, milk, and flakes, supported by health and sustainability trends, continued to underpin demand.

In 2019, coconut production in MENA reached its peak at 6 709 tonnes. The following year, in 2020, output remained unchanged at this level. The most significant increase occurred in 2019, rising by 1.0%, while the largest decline was recorded in 2018 at 0.0%.

Exports coconuts from MENA

The market displayed an unstable trend throughout the period. Exports hit their lowest point in 2018 at 3.1 thousand tonnes, then surged to a peak in 2020 with 7.2 thousand tonnes—a 2.4-fold increase over those two years. In 2020, MENA's coconut exports showed a sharp uptick of 87.9% compared to the previous year. The largest decline was recorded in 2018 at 15.2%.

From 2017 to 2020, the main cluster of markets for coconut exports in kind consisted of Pakistan (1.5% of exports), Free Zones (1.1%), and Sudan (1.0%). Together, these three accounted for 3.7% of total export flows.

In 2020, MENA's cross-border shipments of coconuts totalled 12.0 million US dollars, marking a 27.9% year-on-year increase. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports grew by 72.7%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 20.0%. The largest increase occurred in 2018 at 58.4%, while the most significant decline was in 2019 at 14.8%.

Between 2017 and 2020, the largest group of buyers for MENA's coconuts in value terms included Free Zones (2.5% of exports), Pakistan (1.7%), and Sudan (1.6%). However, their combined contribution was limited to 5.9% of total export value, reflecting a diversified country structure.

Imports coconuts to MENA

After a two-year increase, MENA's imported coconut volumes declined. In 2020, imports registered 121.8 thousand tonnes, showing a moderate decrease of 3.4% compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports increased by 3.7%, with a CAGR of 1.2%. The peak was recorded in 2019 at 126.2 thousand tonnes, while the largest increase occurred in 2018 at 4.9%.

Throughout 2017-2020, India (38.7% of imports in kind), Indonesia (17.1%), and Sri Lanka (16.7%) remained the key partners for coconut imports. Together, they accounted for 72.5% of total import flows.

In 2020, MENA's cross-border shipments of coconuts totalled 128.4 million US dollars, which is 6.4% more than the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports decreased by 3.2%, with a CAGR of 1.1%. The minimum value was recorded in 2019 at 120.7 million US dollars, while the peak occurred in 2018 at 165.6 million US dollars. The largest increase was in 2018 at 24.8%, and the most significant decline was in 2019 at 27.1%.

From 2017 to 2020, Indonesia (25.5% of imports in value terms), India (19.7%), and Vietnam (19.3%) remained the leading destinations in the country structure of coconut imports. Their combined share totalled 64.5% of total flows.
