Coconut oilcake production in Madagascar began the period with stability, supported by the establishment of new industrial processing facilities like the EEIHC and the expansion efforts of leading producer Soavoanio, which aimed to increase copra and coconut output for both domestic use and export markets.

Output started to decline in 2020 and fell more noticeably in 2021 to 3 032 t, as drought conditions linked to the El Niño weather phenomenon disrupted global copra supplies, reducing the raw material available for local oil extraction and subsequent oilcake production.

The downward trend continued through 2022 and 2023, with production reaching 2 881 t, as the sector faced competitive pressure from imported vegetable oils, prompting national producers to request safeguard measures, while government initiatives like the HEAZ portal signaled efforts to strengthen the local oilseed value chain.
