Earlier Report Observations
The market for coconut oil in Nicaragua contracted sharply from 2018 to 2020, with total volume falling from 165.5 thousand tons to just 50.5 thousand tons. This steep decline was driven by a simultaneous drop in domestic production, which nearly halved from 65.1 thousand tons to 34.3 thousand tons, and a collapse in imports from over 100 thousand tons to 16.4 thousand tons.
A gradual recovery began after 2020, lifting the market volume to 75.1 thousand tons by 2023. The growth in 2022 was supported by the expansion of artisanal virgin coconut oil production in the South Caribbean Coast Autonomous Region, adding new local supply. This emerging segment responded to increased global consumer demand for natural and organic coconut oil, which also boosted market activity in Nicaragua.
In 2024, import volumes reached 33.7 thousand tons, while a small export flow of 0.9 thousand tons was recorded. Wholesale prices for coconut oil in the country ranged from $6.68 to $18.70 per kilogram, reflecting ongoing local supply and demand conditions, with artisanal production continuing to cater to health-conscious trends.
