Between 2018 and 2023, the German market for cocoa shells, husks, skins and waste experienced considerable volatility in volume terms. The market size fell from 72,160 t in 2018 to 49,368 t in 2023, with a sharp drop to 50,597 t in 2020 followed by a recovery to 60,864 t in 2022. Production of these cocoa by-products also fluctuated, ranging from a high of 92,976 t in 2022 to a low of 85,594 t in 2023.

In value terms, the market expanded from $9.97 million in 2018 to $14.14 million in 2023, indicating rising unit prices despite the volumetric decline. Imports and exports both showed variability, with exports consistently exceeding imports, leading to a net export position that reduced domestic market volume.

For 2024, trade data shows imports of 4,553 t and exports of 31,081 t, continuing the net export trend. The year was notable for the finalized EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), set to increase cocoa trade compliance costs, and record-high cocoa prices driven by poor harvests in West Africa due to weather and disease.

In 2019, output was 91 935 tonnes, but it fell to 85 929 tonnes in 2020, marking a modest decrease of 6.4%. The peak production occurred in 2018, with the largest annual increase of 6.3% recorded that same year.

Following two years of growth, the production value of cocoa shells, husks, skins, and waste in Germany saw a downturn. In 2019, it reached a high of 12 440 thousand US dollars, but dropped to 11 223 thousand US dollars in 2020, reflecting a moderate decline of 9.8%. Over the entire period from 2017 to 2020, production value rose by 24.5%, averaging an annual growth rate of 7.6%. The most significant increase was in 2018, at 34.3%.

In 2019, shipments were 28 440 tonnes, but they surged to 43 712 tonnes in 2020, a substantial increase of 47.5%. From 2017 to 2020, exports expanded by 20.7%, with a compound annual growth rate of 6.5%. The lowest point was in 2018, which also saw the largest decline of 21.4%.

Between 2017 and 2020, the Netherlands, Italy, and Belgium remained the top buyers of cocoa shells, husks, skins, and waste from Germany. The Netherlands accounted for 40.6% of exports by volume, Italy for 21.0%, and Belgium for 16.7%, together making up 78.3% of total exports.

In 2019, exports were valued at 3 746 thousand US dollars, rising to 5 709 thousand US dollars in 2020, a gain of 42.1%. Over the 2017-2020 period, export value grew by 51.4%, with a compound annual growth rate of 14.8%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018, which also experienced a slight decline of 0.7%.
