Earlier Report Observations

The market volume for cocoa shells, husks, skins, and other cocoa waste in Asia grew from 279.4 thousand tons in 2018 to 310.3 thousand tons in 2023. This expansion occurred through a pattern of advances and retreats: a rise in 2019, a slight dip in 2020, a stronger recovery in 2021, a contraction in 2022, and a new peak reached in 2023.

Domestic production of these cocoa by-products followed a similar trajectory, increasing from 268.4 thousand tons to 306.6 thousand tons across the same six-year span.

In 2024, the global cocoa bean sector, which directly influences the supply of its waste products, faced severe supply constraints. A significant harvest decline in Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana—the world's largest producers—driven by drought, crop disease, and the El Niño weather phenomenon, triggered a historic spike in cocoa bean prices. Concurrently, new European Union labeling rules for cocoa content came into force, affecting compliance for exporters, while the entry of a major new player, Malaysia's Guan Chong Berhad, into West African cocoa processing marked a shift in the industry's structure.
