Earlier Report Observations

Supported by Indonesia's strategic position as Asia's primary cocoa producer and processor, and by policy initiatives to rebalance the cocoa supply chain toward regional growers, the Asian cocoa powder and cake market volume grew to 661 thousand tons in 2019. This was followed by a contraction to 499 thousand tons in 2020.

The market entered a phase of steady recovery from 2021, expanding to 611 thousand tons in 2021, 649 thousand tons in 2022, and reaching 681 thousand tons in 2023.

In 2024, a dramatic spike in global cocoa prices, triggered by unfavorable weather conditions in West Africa which constrained worldwide supply, increased demand for Asian-sourced cocoa. This was accompanied by Cargill's launch of a new processing line in Indonesia in October 2024 to cater to growing regional demand in bakery, ice cream, confectionery, and beverage segments, while rising consumer preference for quality chocolate products further influenced the market dynamics.
