Earlier Report Observations

The market volume for cocoa powder and cake in Oceania fluctuated between 2018 and 2023. It declined from 35 729 tonnes in 2018 to approximately 31 300 tonnes in the 2019-2021 period, then rose to a peak of 33 750 tonnes in 2022 before falling to 30 904 tonnes in 2023. This occurred alongside a strong doubling of domestic production from 6 645 tonnes to over 13 500 tonnes, while import volumes generally decreased.

The market's highest point in 2022 was supported by key developments. Barry Callebaut's expansion of its factory in Campbellfield, Melbourne, increased local production capacity. At the same time, growing consumer interest in premium, bean-to-bar chocolate products and health-conscious eating habits boosted demand for cocoa powder in bakery and confectionery items.
