Vietnam's coal market volume expanded significantly from 79 541 thousand tons in 2018 to a peak of 98 242 thousand tons in 2020. This growth was primarily driven by a sharp rise in imports, which increased from 38 900 thousand tons to 54 535 thousand tons over the two-year period, supplementing domestic production which remained above 42 000 thousand tons.

The market contracted in 2021, falling to 81 674 thousand tons, and saw a further slight decrease to 79 349 thousand tons in 2022. This downturn was marked by a substantial reduction in coal imports, which fell to 30 673 thousand tons in 2022, offsetting a steady increase in local production that reached 49 855 thousand tons.

Production coal in Vietnam

Between 2017 and 2020, Vietnam ranked as the 15th largest coal producer in the world.

After two years of growth, Vietnam's coal production declined. In 2020, the country produced 44 598 K t of coal, down 5.4% from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production increased by 16.1%, which translates to an annualized growth rate of 5.1%. The peak was recorded in 2019 at 47 158 K t, with the largest annual increase of 11.3% occurring that same year.

Exports coal from Vietnam

Exports in kind, K t

Vietnam's coal exports declined for the third year in a row. In 2020, exports totaled 891 K t, a 22.1% drop from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, exports fell by 56.6%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of -24.3%.

From 2017 to 2020, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore were the main destinations for Vietnam's coal exports, accounting for 69.8% of the total volume. Japan led with 45.3%, followed by South Korea at 12.6% and Singapore at 11.9%.

Exports in value, M $ US

Coal export revenues in Vietnam fell for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports were valued at 116 M $ US, a sharp decline of 31.5% compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, export revenues decreased by 52.7%, equating to an annualized rate of -22.1%. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 320 M $ US, which saw the largest increase of 30.9% that year. The most significant drop occurred in 2019, with a 47.2% decrease.

During 2017-2020, Japan, Singapore, and South Korea remained the key markets for Vietnam's coal exports in value terms, collectively representing 70.8% of total export revenues. Japan accounted for 43.9%, Singapore for 13.6%, and South Korea for 13.2%.

Imports coal to Vietnam

Vietnam's coal imports rose for the third year in a row. In 2020, imports reached 54 535 K t, a substantial increase of 26.4% from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports surged by 288.9%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 57.3%.

From 2017 to 2020, Indonesia, Australia, and Russia were the primary sources for Vietnam's coal imports, together making up 86.5% of the total volume.

The value of Vietnam's coal imports increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, import value stood at 3 594 M $ US, showing a modest year-on-year rise of 2.2%. Between 2017 and 2020, import values grew by 172.3%, with an annualized rate of 39.6%.

In 2017-2020, Australia, Indonesia, and Russia formed the core group of markets for Vietnam's coal imports in value terms, with a combined share of 85.5%. Australia led with 42.3%, followed by Indonesia at 26.8% and Russia at 16.4%.
