The coal market in Pakistan expanded consistently from 2018 to 2021, with total volume rising from 20.3 million tons to 28.8 million tons. This growth was followed by a contraction in 2022, when the market size fell to 26.2 million tons.

Behind these movements, domestic coal production more than doubled over the period, reaching 9.7 million tons in 2022. Imports also increased until 2021, peaking at 19.6 million tons, before dropping in 2022, which contributed to the overall market reduction.

Pakistan's coal production has increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 8 599 K t of coal, marking a significant 59.0% increase from 2019.
