Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2019, citrus fruit production in Bolivia increased to 940 thousand tonnes, supported by phytosanitary protection campaigns from the National Service of Agricultural Health and Food Safety (SENASAG) against Huanglongbing (HLB) disease, which improved tree health and yields. However, production dipped slightly in 2020 to 932 thousand tonnes as the sector faced strong international competition and slow expansion in production and commercialization, limiting market growth.

Production declined further in 2021 to 911 thousand tonnes, but saw a modest recovery in 2022 to 914 thousand tonnes following the start of construction of the Bartolina Sisa fruit processing plant in La Paz, which aimed to add value to domestic production and stimulate raw material demand. In 2023, despite increased consumer demand for citrus juices and fruits during winter months, total production edged down to 908 thousand tonnes.
