Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2020, Bolivia's banana market volume saw fluctuations driven primarily by export performance. In 2018, exports to Chile doubled, but the key Argentine market contracted due to an economic crisis and competition from other countries, leading to a drop in total exports the following year. This export decline contributed to a rise in domestic market volume to 192 thousand tons in 2019. However, in 2020, exports recovered, reducing market volume to 185 thousand tons while its value increased to 57.5 million USD, likely reflecting higher prices.

The market adjusted further in 2022 when banana exports hit a record 127 thousand tons, earning 41 million USD, largely facilitated by a special payment mechanism with Argentina. This surge in exports lowered domestic volume to 181 thousand tons but pushed market value to 66 million USD. By 2023, volume stabilized at 181 thousand tons with a slight value dip to 64.1 million USD. In 2024, export volume fell 19% and value dropped 30% through August, coinciding with government subsidies through EMAPA and investment plans aimed at boosting production and seeking new international markets.
