The citrus fruit market in Angola saw its volume expand from 842 thousand tons in 2018 to 981 thousand tons in 2023. This growth followed the launch of the national PRODESI program in 2018, designed to boost local agricultural output and curb imports. While initial years faced hurdles like limited mechanization, the policy framework supported a sustained production increase from 2020 onward.

A significant driver was the 5.9% rise in entrepreneurial fruit production reported for the 2022/2023 agricultural campaign. That same campaign highlighted overall agricultural growth, with citrus fruit among the commodities posting higher output, aided by continued incentives for local farming. The diversification of local fruit offerings in rural markets also strengthened domestic consumption.

Looking ahead, the National Development Plan 2023‑2027 prioritizes food autonomy and sustainable family agriculture, targeting a further 6.7% increase in citrus production for the 2024‑2025 campaign. However, logistical bottlenecks and currency deflation continue to influence production costs and market distribution.
