Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2022, the chocolate and cocoa products market in MENA expanded consistently, primarily fueled by shifting consumer preferences. Initial growth in 2018 was supported by rising demand for high-cocoa content chocolate due to its perceived health benefits. The market broadened in 2019 with the introduction of new premium, dark, and organic varieties. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic temporarily slowing production in 2020, major players like Barry Callebaut invested in dairy-free chocolate lines to meet modern demand. The entry of new competitors with vegan offerings, such as Galaxy Vegan, alongside increased use of cocoa powder in various applications, further stimulated the market in 2021. A significant surge occurred in 2022, driven by consumer trends towards adventurous cooking experiences, sustainable products, and a growing appetite for premium chocolate.

The market dynamic shifted in 2023 due to a severe supply-side crisis. Adverse weather conditions, including irregular rainfall and droughts in West Africa, drastically reduced cocoa harvests. This shortage led to a sharp increase in raw material prices, higher production costs, and the shutdown of some processing facilities. Consequently, the market volume in physical terms declined, although its value in monetary terms rose as higher prices were passed on to consumers.

Throughout the period, digitalization and sustainability trends reshaped the market landscape. The expansion of e-commerce distribution channels, notably in 2022, improved product accessibility. Furthermore, the growing influence of environmental advocates and sustained demand for organic products encouraged innovation, exemplified by Barry Callebaut's launch of its specialized MALEO cocoa powder to meet evolving market requests.
