Earlier Report Observations

The cocoa powder and cake market in the MENA region showed considerable movement between 2018 and 2022. Starting at 103.4 thousand tons, market volume rose to 115.9 thousand tons in 2019 before a period of stabilization and a subsequent decline to 108.3 thousand tons by 2022. Domestic production followed a volatile path, falling sharply in 2020 and only partially recovering in the following years.

A significant rebound occurred in 2023, with the market expanding to 119.9 thousand tons. This recovery was supported by a concurrent 10.9% surge in imports to 111.8 thousand tons. The market operated against a backdrop of a severe global cocoa supply deficit, where exceptionally heavy rainfall and a viral disease in West Africa reduced worldwide cocoa output by 12.9% for the 2023/2024 season, creating tighter supplies and higher price pressures for chocolate manufacturers and consumers in the region.

Import volumes continued their upward trend into 2024, reaching 121.7 thousand tons. This growth was fueled by strong regional demand for chocolate-based confectionery and bakery products, which increased the need for alkalized cocoa powder. Furthermore, the MENA e-commerce sector's expansion, which grew by 30% in 2024, enhanced the digital sales channels for cocoa powder and related products.
