Earlier Report Observations
The chicken meat and offal market in the Philippines expanded from 1.7 million tonnes in 2018 to over 1.9 million tonnes by 2023. This growth was initially driven by a shift in consumer preferences, as chicken overtook pork as the most consumed protein in the country for the first time in 2019. However, the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 disrupted supply chains and temporarily reduced market volume to 1.73 million tonnes.
Following the pandemic, the market recovered and continued to grow, reaching 1.87 million tonnes in 2022 and 1.91 million tonnes in 2023. A key factor was poultry's affordability, with prices nearly half those of red meat, which encouraged higher consumption. In 2023, chicken production increased by 7.67% year-on-year despite El Niño conditions, leading to lower retail prices and further stimulating demand.
Recent developments include significant investments in production capacity and cold-chain infrastructure. San Miguel Corp announced a $1.2 billion plan to expand poultry operations with new mega farms, while logistics companies are expanding cold storage networks to enhance supply security. These investments, along with continued imports to meet demand, support the market's expansion.
