Earlier Report Observations

Local chicken meat production in Sierra Leone increased from 15 679 t in 2018 to 18 070 t by 2020, driven by the entry of new players like Muvah Produce and technical support from the World Bank-funded Sierra Leone Economic Diversification Project (SLEDP), which expanded and modernized local poultry farming. Growing domestic demand due to population growth and urbanization further supported production in 2019. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 disrupted supply chains, but government food security measures helped maintain production growth.

In 2021, the launch of the Feed Salone program brought investments into agro-processing, indirectly benefiting the poultry sector, although local production edged down to 17 654 t. Imports surged that year, lifting the total market volume to 58 776 t. The following year, global cost pressures from the war in Ukraine raised input and energy prices, contributing to a drop in imports and a modest rise in domestic output to 17 906 t, with the overall market contracting to 48 346 t.

Production continued to recover in 2023, reaching 18 159 t, while imports grew to 32 543 t, bringing the total market volume to 50 678 t. Government policy remained focused on food self-sufficiency through the ongoing Feed Salone initiative.
