Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, the domestic market volume for chicken meat and offal in Paraguay expanded, reaching 68 654 tons in 2019. This growth was supported by the introduction of import quotas for chicken meat in 2019, which limited foreign competition and encouraged local supply. The following year, the market stabilized despite the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to the suspension of major promotional fairs like Expo Mariano Roque Alonso, temporarily affecting local marketing channels.

Between 2021 and 2023, the market volume gradually declined to 65 958 tons, even as domestic production continued to rise. This shift was primarily driven by a surge in exports, which more than doubled from 5 477 tons in 2018 to 13 303 tons in 2023. Key export-oriented developments included the first shipment of Paraguayan poultry to the Philippines in 2022, opening a new Southeast Asian market, and a broader industry focus on increasing poultry exports through improved health standards and productivity measures.

In the subsequent years, export expansion remained a central theme. The authorization of Halal certification for chicken meat in 2024 provided access to additional religious-compliant markets, while a 10% increase in poultry production in 2025 further strengthened the sector's export capacity. These factors contributed to a reorientation of the Paraguayan chicken industry toward international markets, which kept domestic market volume under pressure despite growing production.
