Earlier Report Observations

The Austrian chicken meat market expanded in volume from 124.7 thousand tons in 2018 to 152.6 thousand tons in 2023, driven by sustained consumer demand for its versatility and ease of preparation. Domestic production increased over this period, supported by the abolition of housing requirements due to avian influenza in 2021, which facilitated higher slaughter volumes.

From 2022 onward, EU trade facilitation measures granted Ukraine duty-free access for poultry meat, leading to a sharp rise in imports that significantly contributed to market growth. This influx coincided with avian influenza outbreaks that affected domestic flocks, reducing self-sufficiency from 86% in 2022 to 81% in 2023. Despite these challenges, per capita consumption continued to climb, reaching 22.3 kg in 2023.

The market's value grew even more markedly, from 357.2 million US dollars in 2018 to 541.9 million in 2023, reflecting both higher volumes and increased prices, such as the notable rise in broiler prices observed in 2022. Industry investments in new barns aimed to meet demand, while new EU organic regulations and animal welfare requirements introduced additional operational adjustments.
