Earlier Report Observations

Peru's chestnut market volume showed relative stability from 2018 to 2020, with domestic consumption hovering between 613 and 617 thousand tons annually against a backdrop of steady production. During this period, foundational export initiatives were launched, including the first direct shipment of organic chestnuts to Italy in 2018, facilitated by state sustainable development programs, and negotiations to access the Chinese market began in 2019.

The domestic market volume contracted sharply to 575 thousand tons in 2021 and further to 446 thousand tons in 2022. This decline was driven by a surge in exports. In 2021, overseas shipments rebounded, growing 63.8% post-pandemic, fueled by organic consumption trends in the United States. The following year, export volumes peaked at nearly 170 thousand tons after SENASA certified over 600 tons for shipment to more than twenty international markets, diversifying trade flows to destinations like South Korea, France, and the United Kingdom.

By 2023, export activity subsided significantly, allowing the domestic market volume to recover fully to 617 thousand tons, returning to pre-2021 levels of availability for local consumption.
