Earlier Report Observations

The cheese and curd market in Moldova began the period at 17,147 t in 2018 but contracted to 15,662 t in 2019. This decline coincided with high raw milk costs domestically, which reduced the competitiveness of local production compared to cheaper imports, particularly from Ukraine.

A recovery started in 2020, lifting the market to 18,945 t, and growth continued through 2021, reaching 23,154 t. After a slight stabilization at 22,738 t in 2022, volume climbed again to 24,524 t in 2023. In value terms, the market expanded consistently from $65.8 million in 2018 to $127.9 million in 2023.

In 2024, sectoral policies and subsidies for authorized farms supported a sharp increase in cheese production, while imports jumped to 11,886 t and exports fell to 143 t.
