In 2018, the cereal germ market in Senegal reached 60 530 t. Artisanal and semi-industrial processors of local cereals faced working capital constraints, which limited their expansion, but improvements in product quality helped restore consumer confidence. Over the next two years, the market stabilized around 59 000 t with minor fluctuations.

A sustained growth phase began in 2021, with the market volume rising to 69 535 t by 2023—a 16% increase from 2020. This expansion was driven by favorable rainfall conditions and improved access to state-subsidized fertilizers, which boosted cereal yields. Government support, including the distribution of high-yield hybrid maize seeds and a record budget for agricultural input subsidies in 2023, stimulated local production. Additionally, a vibrant agro-processing sector and the organization of the local maize market through clusters and contracts added value and strengthened supply chains.

In 2024, modernization efforts continued with the acquisition of irrigation equipment and tools, alongside the implementation of a national food sovereignty strategy focusing on reducing import dependency and enhancing the resilience of cereal supply chains.

Senegal's cereal germ production declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 58,679 tonnes, a slight decrease of 1.3% compared to the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production actually grew by 18.2%, which translates to an average annual increase of 5.7%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 60,527 tonnes, marking a significant jump of 21.9% that year. However, in 2019, production saw its largest decline of 1.8%.
