The market for castor oil and fractions in Sub-Saharan Africa showed significant volatility between 2018 and 2023. It began the period at 41 488 tonnes but contracted sharply in 2019, falling by 16% to 34 914 tonnes.

After the 2019 downturn, the market volume stabilized and gradually recovered, reaching 36 166 tonnes by 2022. However, this trend was interrupted in 2023 when consumption fell again to 34 387 tonnes, nearly returning to the post-2019 level.

In 2020, Sub-Saharan Africa produced 32 892 tonnes of castor oil and fractions, marking a slight increase of 0.7% compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production declined by 8%, with a compound annual growth rate of -2.7%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 32 677 tonnes, while the peak occurred in 2018 with 36 993 tonnes. The most significant decrease was observed in 2019, dropping by 11.7%, whereas the largest increase took place in 2018, rising by 3.5%.

Export volumes showed notable fluctuations during the period. The lowest point was in 2017, followed by a peak in 2018, with a 7.3-fold difference between these years. In 2020, Sub-Saharan Africa exported 58 tonnes of castor oil and fractions, representing a sharp year-over-year decline of 62.5%. The maximum export volume was recorded in 2018 at 300 tonnes, with the largest increase that year reaching 630.0%.

From 2017 to 2020, Thailand, Sudan, and France remained the top buyers of castor oil and fractions from Sub-Saharan Africa. Thailand accounted for 64.6% of exports in kind, Sudan for 3.8%, and France for 3.5%. Together, these three countries represented 71.9% of total exports in kind.

Export values displayed an unstable trend throughout the timeframe. The lowest point was in 2017, followed by a peak in 2018, with a 13-fold difference between these years. In 2020, Sub-Saharan Africa exported castor oil and fractions worth 169 thousand US dollars, showing little change compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, India, China, and Spain were the primary sources for imports in kind of castor oil and fractions into Sub-Saharan Africa. India accounted for 61.8% of imports, China for 17.3%, and Spain for 10.1%. Together, these three countries represented 89.2% of total import flows.
