Earlier Report Observations

Production of castor oil in India began the period strongly in 2018 at 777.4 thousand tonnes, supported by the entry of a new player, Rajgor Castor Derivatives Ltd, and the ongoing operations of established manufacturers like Arvalli Castor Derivatives. Domestic market volume was 181.8 thousand tonnes that year. Output and market size then contracted in 2019 before recovering in 2020, with production reaching 814.2 thousand tonnes and domestic consumption 155.9 thousand tonnes.

The market continued its expansion from 2021 to 2023, with production volumes peaking at 855.6 thousand tonnes in 2021. Although production dipped in 2022, the domestic market volume grew steadily throughout these three years, reaching 193.7 thousand tonnes in 2023. India's position as the world's largest exporter was reinforced, with exports of 629.8 thousand tonnes in 2023, backed by major producers like Royal Castor Products Limited. In value terms, the domestic market reached USD 333 million in 2022 before a slight correction to USD 311 million in 2023.

In 2024, the export volume remained high at 701.6 thousand tonnes. The industry context was marked by a strategic shift in the value chain from commodity trade toward higher-margin specialty chemicals and polymers, focusing on the chemical potential of Ricinoleic Acid. This transition occurred alongside clarified GST tax classifications for edible and non-edible castor oil grades under specific HSN codes, affecting compliance.
