Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, India's coconut oil production remained stable at around 590-595 thousand tonnes. During this period, domestic prices for copra and coconut oil began rising from 2019 onward, and the Virgin Coconut Oil segment emerged as a significant growth area, reflecting shifting consumer preferences towards value-added products.

Production volumes declined to 556 thousand tonnes in 2021 and further to 534 thousand tonnes in 2022. This contraction coincided with strong export growth for coconut-based products such as chips, milk, and virgin coconut oil, which diverted supply from the domestic market. Government initiatives, including a US$ 10 million investment to expand cultivation area and establish six new processing units for value-added products, aimed at boosting long-term output but faced short-term supply tightness.

The market size recovered to 533 thousand tonnes in 2023. In 2024, prolonged droughts and heatwaves in major producing states Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka reduced mature coconut availability, squeezing copra production. The central government's increase in import duties on other edible oils raised demand for domestic coconut oil, while higher Minimum Support Prices for copra were introduced to support growers. A Supreme Court ruling clarified that pure coconut oil marketed as hair oil is classified as edible oil, simplifying the regulatory framework for packaged products.
